New Laptop next week.

Well this puppy is being discontinued at Wal-mart but it looks like the one I'll be picking up.

I've always been a fan and loyal to AMD products and this one looks like it'll be a winner.

I had a hard time finding information on the net but I was wondering if anyone could narrow down these processors in terms of what's best.

AMD Turion MK36
Intel Celeron M Processor 520 &
AMD Athlon 64 Dual Core Processor

I've always wanted to own a laptop so I'm hoping to at least get the best I can. Retail at my store is $598.00 for the one in the link but I'll get to take 10% off since I work there.

I'm pretty sure FFXI will run on this thing without a hitch.

Edit: Found a Laptop discussion forum about this and I'm feeling more & more happy about the choice in this Laptop. I was able to get a Clock Speed on the Turion running at a flat 2.0 Ghz and the Intel was at 1.7 Ghz so that's a no brainer.

I have no idea how fast the Athlon 64 Dual Core is running at tho.

i used to like amd alot... all 4 of my custom built pc's i had in the past were amd (and my current one now)...

but in todays world of dual core 2... intel is just the better choice

if you can hold out a bit longer, and save up a bit more money.. it'd be more worth it in the end

oh and you cant compare a celeron to anything .. its garbage D;

Well I went to check on the Laptop again to make sure it's what I wanted. This model is no longer being made or is being pulled from Wal-mart in my area seeing as it's no longer orderable in the system.

I was a bit worried at 1st because the model on the website lists the AMD Athlon 64 Dual Core Processor as what's under the hood running at 1.5 to 1.7Ghz iirc but when I went to look at the actual box which thankfully the dude in the Electronics Dept is a friend of mine so he stashed the last unit behind a huge stack of PS3s seeing as it's obvious enough that those PS3s will be there for awhile. *lol* so I'll have this bad puppy on Thursday.

Anyways the excat unit is Acer Aspire 5050-3371 Model # ZR3. The Processor is the Mobil AMD Turion 64 MK-36 Processor running at 2.0 Ghz so I'm kind of pleased I was able to get this damn thing pinned down before someone grabbed it.

im not too keen on acer, but the stats you listed are pretty good... you'll be able to run pretty much anything without much difficulty..
ffxi will run excellently since i believe it doesnt use hardware acceleration or something like that (basically uses the cpu for everything and doesnt touch the graphics card)

before i buy any new computer stuff that i dont know alot about, i always check http://www.tomshardware.com
they do loads of tests on stuff, and give you unbiased information that takes into account everything, including price and practicality

anyways for $600USD? thats a steal really, and i'd go for it given your circumstances

Ok coolness. I didn't know about this site. I was looking around other webpages in trying to find out any solid info on this thing and most of them have come back positive. FFXI won't be a problem since it only needs a min of 700 Mhz in a processor to even run.

Once I get some moolah on the next check after this one, the 1st thing I'm buying is more ram to probably pump it up to 4 gigs under the hood so I'm not fighting with Windows Vista since it takes about 80% of a gig of ram to even fucking run properly.

From what I understand, FFXI runs mostly off your CPU and doesn't take full advantage off your graphics card. This is why you'll get better performance off a better CPU than if you just upgraded your graphics card. Of course, this is all hearsay, I dunno dick about computers. Really. Eh i wouldn't say it was offtopic insofar as it does bring the question to mind how FFXI does run off a decent PC. I heard you can somehow "trick" the game into running better by somehow taking advantage of a PC's power.

I can't recall what you needed to do and I do remember it being very tricky to get it to work.
