drinking illegally is cool and all, but you can't go out to bars and clubs until you're legal. Parties get boring, if you go to a party every weekend for a month you may meet one new person? Going downtown you meet a shitload of new (hot bitches) people every night you go. Its way more fun. Of course parties are still kewl but parties to me means having a couple drinks, talking to people you always talk to, and then going home.
Going clubbing is more like, get really drunk, wonder around downtown all night, possibly pick up some chicks, wake up and don't remember where/what happened last night.

latter is quite a fun experience.
