Elderly billionaire suicides after losing 1/4th his fortune

#1 Post by Ploid »

http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/europe/01 ... index.html

Poor guy, darn this economy. Going from 12 bil to 9 bil would make quite a few people freak out.

German billionaire Adolf Merckle, one of the richest men in the world, committed suicide Monday after his business empire got into trouble in the wake of the international financial crisis, Merckle's family said Tuesday in a statement.

Merckle, 74, was hit by a train in the southwestern town of Ulm, police said.

His family said the economic crisis had "broken" Merckle.

He was number 94 on the Forbes list of the world's richest people. He had fallen from number 44 on the Forbes 2007 rich list as his fortune declined from $12.8 billion to $9.2 billion in 2008.

Merckle's business empire included interests as diverse as cement-maker HeidelbergCement and generic drug-maker Ratiopharm. But he lost hundreds of millions of dollars, including company capital, betting against Volkswagen stock last year.

The state government of Baden-Wuerttemberg rejected his petition for financial assistance, and he entered bailout talks with several German banks.

"The financial troubles of his companies, induced by the international financial crisis and the uncertainty and powerlessness to act independently which the financial problems brought about, broke the passionate family business man, and he took his own life," his family wrote in the news release.

An employee of Germany's railroad company found the body on the tracks at about 7 p.m. Monday and notified authorities. Merckle's family had already reported him missing earlier in the day after he walked out of the house and did not return. Authorities are currently conducting DNA tests to confirm his identity.

I remember losing $20 that was given to me by my uncle when I was a kid. My world was turned upside down and I was down on myself as I watched my siblings, and cousins with their money in tact. It was horrible, and I wouldn't wish this type of thing on anyone.

Sorry what, you wouldnt wish a guy thats obviously been living incredibly comfortably for most of his life and is sat on a 12.6 billion fortune to lose some of it?
He'll own his own house, have money saved away, and the fact he was 72 means that hed likely have been close to retiring anyway.
So rly.
Wut Yorke said.

I'd say making 70k per year is living comfortably. Having net worth of 12 billion is living lavishly.

It's not just about the money. He couldn't show his face again without being laughed at as a disgrace. Pride and honor. This guy reminds me of a samurai. He was gravely embarrassed and as such he had to take his life.

It must be said that in Japan suicide in the form of seppuku, better known in the West as hara-kiri, has a long and honourable tradition. It has always been regarded as the proper atonement for failure.

The way i see it, it's better to lose 25% rather than 75%.

But say you've been a billionaire for 20 years, then all of a sudden you stop gaining more money, and lose billions instead. Now your accountants are telling you that there's a big hole in your money pool and you're going to lose even more money because they can't stop it. You're 90 in the forbes list now, but later you'll be even further down the list. No one likes to be a laughing stock.

It's like Amylea getting kicked out of TG and having to join a startup LS, or MrD. Sure he has a lot of nice things already, but he won't be getting a second relic weapon any time soon. He might as well off himself due to all the pointing and laughing.

Now let's take a guy that lived in a river side high rise apartment for years.

Back to your dorm apartment with crappy campus view.

A bit of a different thing totally but I think it gets the point over. We probably think it's hard to tell the difference between 12bil and 9 bil but for what he was taking care of maybe it was easy to tell. The more money you have, the more money you need.

..but there's a certain point when money doesn't have any value or use other than to say my wallet can be up your wallet.

Anyone with one billion $ (i.e ONE THOUSAND MILLION) has no reason to be emo, ever. Even if they had 200billion the day before.

You really have to put into context how much a FUCKING BILLION DOLLARS IS before you even consider how much he lost. He'd still be able to buy literally ANYTHING he really wants. Think about winning the Mega Millions lottery....10 times.

I'm just having fun with you guys here. He lost his number 44 spot in forbes is all I see that could have had him killing himself over. Pier pressure, shame, or something that's beyond money.
