The plane was the ajira plane with claire/kate/la-penis/richard etc. getting off the island, meaning jack had saved them by putting the plug in that thing or w/e. Also the spot he dies in, and it zooms in on the eye closing is the same spot the whole series starts in, except his eye opens in the first episode when vincent came and lay down with him it was so sad :< dont tell me im the only one who got teary eyed u fgts

But the way i saw it was no they weren't dead the whole time on the island, like jack said everything was real and happened, the sideways universe was sort of a purgatory where they all met up again after they had all eventually died (the ppl who got off the island could have lived for a long time, who knows how long hurley stayed and protected the island etc.[ben was like u was a good #1 my nigga, and hurley was like you was a good #2 holmes, meaning they both stuck around and protected the island for xxxx years]) and then they all moved on together except certain people like that nigga michael because he was a dick, so he's stuck roaming the island as a whisperer forever.

Christian telling Jack that he was dead too was probably the saddest part for me. Sawyer and Juliette reuniting was good as well.

I think you pretty much covered the end, Island was real and the Sideways reality was a world they all created in the afterlife so they could meet up again. And fuck Michael. Eko too.

Without having seen a single episode of the show, I can say with authority that cutting to a black screen without warning during a very open-ended scene would have ended the show much better. So glad I didn't watch the series
