FFXI was the first and only game that made me do this (not everything, just optional events when I was seemingly needed in Eden, finally got a party after lfp for a few hours, or if I was camping a NM and it was going to pop soon), the other times I skipped stuff is when I was hanging out with friends playing madden all night then going home in the morning type stuff.
I'm never playing a game that I can't pause, take too long to get to a safe spot, and require too many daggone people to get stuff done again. Takes up too much free time, I could have been studying bones, or random useful information. That's what I used to do lol, before the internet I studied for no reason. Now I only do it when I have to, or if youtube is taking me down a rabbit hole of cool information.
One day I watched a video of a guy cutting down a tree, that tree then proceeded to fall on his house. After that I clicked the next tree fell tree vid and how to fell trees vids. During that I learned people get pissed if you call it Tree Fall instead of Fell, and that looking at the stump you can tell if the guy that cut the tree was a idiot and did it wrong.
Also you aren't supposed to just rely on the notch to direct the tree's drop path, you need to take in a lot of different factors for consideration. Rope, a truck or something with good horse power (don't depend on a kid to be able to control a falling tree), and you may need to cut limbs, or the canopy. Felling a tree is serious business especially when important structures in it's radius.
