No magic behind it, every storage container was always able to have a max of 80 items assigned. It was merely limited through the game's mechanics.

They said in some interview that after they made everything 80/80/80, they would look at ways of making more of your inventory available at once.

seriously, awesome idea compared to gay inventory.
also, make it so that the gear you have equipped doesn't count towards your inventory total.
