So, Work Policies...
Re: So, Work Policies...
Dude, you need to choose your battles wisely. At the end of this long crusade you gain what?

I wouldn't bother myself with such trivial situations.

I gain the right to dye my hair whatever colour I like without anyone butting their nose in where it does not belong.

You are also going to get a few dozen manager types who will be looking for a way to get rid of you.

No slavage tonight...
Of course i will. Except i'm very very good at my job, be it as shit as it is, i'm one of the most efficient people working on my department. I'm also willing to do whatever shifts they want me to do, and cover whoever needs covering. But once i come to the end of this debate with them, i'm going to go in, do my job, any problems that management should deal with get them to deal with it, and in home. No more caring. I'm looking for jobs elsewhere atm anyway, and gonna take up an evening course in the college. i want to get on now, but i'm adamant i'll see this through to the end, no matter who is right or how they want to colour it, i want them to know that they can't go on treating anyone like shit. I'm doing this for my people, i am a martyr! And a right pain in the arse.

The rule is asking for common sense. Which Fran lacks probably.

In the end what he gains is his dignity and respect that's due. Based on the information provided, you can clearly see why he's being singled out, and like he said, it's job for money so it's not like his career's at stake. There will always be other jobs.
Both the corporate office and his supervisor are at fault, his supervisor for being narrow-minded, and his corporate office for not having specific guidelines as to what constitutes as 'professional'.

You go, girl!

Re: So, Work Policies...
UPDATE!
So, Tuesday I walk into work and approach the Wages' office; Verena works in Wages and she is both A) Very awesome, B) a Union Representitive and C) My Ex-Girlfriend's mother (the one that dumped me Christmas time via Text Message).
As I walk up to the room, I hear Fran in the office talking to Verena about me, and Verena can't stop laughing. But before I could hear anything awesome, the Store Manager walks through the corridor and I have to look like I'm not doing nothing and eavesdropping on a conversation, so I walk into the room. Fran's face drops as I say, "Hope you're not talking about me!". I make up some bullshit reason why I'm in the room, then leave (for you see, I don't want Fran to suspect that I am taking the issue further).
Anyway, I was unable to speak to Verena that day. But it turns out I didn't need to. For you see, Yesterday Verena came to the Garage and told me that she personally has gotten involved in my case because she completely disagrees with Fran on the matter, and actually tied Fran up in legal knots over it. Fran is lucky and within an inch of keeping HER job because if she had suspended me last Saurday, I would have sue'd her for Wrongful Suspension on the ground of Sexual Discrimination, and win my case easily. For you see, I could use the 2 boys that she has called up before with their hair (one, Aaron, had his fringe red with jet-black hair, and he was going for promotion, so he dyed his asap; and the other quit 2 weeks later and moved on somewhere) as witnesses to prove that Fran has called up Men before for the way they look, and then I could call Women with coloured hair to come forth and they can testify that they never had anyone approach them. Point. Set. Match.
Now, Verena had Fran tied up in a thousand different ways, and told her point blank that she needs to be really careful how she treads. Because of her threat to me, she has to carry it out (D-Day is this coming Tuesday as to whether I have re-dyed my hair or not, which I haven't) at which point she is forced to suspend me because if she doesn't, she's breaking company policy (empty threats, etc... It's down on my record but nothing has come of it, how does that make Fran look when she threatens to do something but doesn't actually carry it out? S'up no promotion!), and thus strenthening my case, etc... Verena has told me as much that Fran wishes she never said anything, and that she's going to 'kill' Lorraine (the other manager who initially raised the issue, but pissed off for 2 weeks so she didn't have to deal with it) when she gets back. All the managers have actually held a meeting over this, which Verena demanded she attended (Union, etc) to discuss various possible outcomes. Verena gave them an ultimatum...
Either:
It's not hard to decide which one Deb will be forced into making. The problem is, she's on holiday this week too, so she has to make the decision on Monday, without being able to make a clear judgement of everyone in the store (people work different days, etc).
So I'm rather happy. Management is really pissed off. I'll get to dye my hair whatever the hell colour I like, and Lorraine is getting a really stern talking to when she gets back...

Either:
- A) Deb Isreal (who is the Personnel Manager) has to assess the entire staff in the store and decide whether or not to make it an entire store policy that all members of staff must have "natural hair colour" so that Fran can get off with it, and have nothing charged against her, but for saving one person's arse she'd make a LOT of people very angry, and the store is already stressed enough as it is (No overtime since Christmas, Store Manager isn't hiring new staff to replace the one's that's left in the meantime, etc...) and the likelihood of that is that a very quantifiable amount of people will refuse to do it, and thus the management have no other decision other than to suspend them too, which will effectively make the store a nightmare, and sales will drop because stock isn't put out, queues will be huge because not enough people on checkouts, departments will close etc etc etc, which will reflect poorly on Andrew Thorne (Store Manager) and he won't be getting his promotion or yearly bonus either
- B) Deb Isreal decided to drop the case completely, the entire scenario is taken off my record, and I get a letter of apology from Fran, and have grounds to take the matter further anyway by being singled out by management. But in all honesty, I won't do this. I'll leave it there if I get my letter.
It's not hard to decide which one Deb will be forced into making. The problem is, she's on holiday this week too, so she has to make the decision on Monday, without being able to make a clear judgement of everyone in the store (people work different days, etc).
