Ok, so my sister left to Iraq yesterday, and before she did she bought a shiny new laptop and left me the one she tore to hell. Sooooo....what she wanted me to do with her old one was try to get everything off the hard drive and if I could salvage it, I could keep it. Hrmmmmmmmm.............

Ok, so here's what it's doing. It's a Compaq Presario 2500, that's about as much info as I can give on it, I'm not at home right now (jeez, I sound like one of my customers!). Anyways, without the power supply, it won't power up at all, and with the power supply it will power up, but then shut down within a few moments. I'm not very laptop savvy, but I've had this problem before on my pc, with the problem coming from my power supply. Anyways, so I figured that the powers supply may not be charing the battery and could just be crap.

But then it also does something....peculiar. The power button will intermittenly turn it on, sometimes it does nothing. However, there are some other buttons on it (you know like those lame ass web buttons and email buttons they make for god knows what), if I press one of these buttons, it will power up, but then it shuts off like normal. At one point I got it to come on for a little longer enough for windows to completely load, then it shut down. :bll:

Before I go replacing parts, I wanted to get your feedback and see if anyone might be able to think of what was causing this.

could also be the motherboard or like you said the power supply connection on the motherboard. I had an old old old laptop with this problem and it ended up being a problem with the battery (wouldnt keep a charge) and the power supply connection on the motherboard was broken. We ended up having to replace the motherboard which depending on how you get it can be expensive. Ive replaced motherboards twice on two different pcs first time was like 250 second time was 500 D:

at the rate laptops are going you can buy a new one for 500 :/

All in all we've decided to scrap the laptop and I'll just buy a new one. If anything the best time to do that would be now since Circuit City filed for bankruptcy. :D
