so long as you dont smash his head in from behind as this would be classed as him retreating and therfor you wouldn't be attacking him in self defense. If however you take him to top of stairs and throw him down stairs you can say you opened bedroom door on hearing an unfamiliar sound and there he was standing at top of stairs, he was as surprised as you and 'lost his footing' thus fell back and proceeded to bounce his way in an unflattering manner to the bottom, where he lies now unconscious
