The 11th Hour: how Take Two made sure journalists gave GTA IV "overrated" reviews.

"Very interesting read on a reviewer's look back at his review for GTA IV, and why this game and others can be "overrated" simply because of the lack of time alloted by game publishers, and the window they have to publish their own reviews.

http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=18761

Some great segments:"

Quote:
Four weeks ago in this publication I referred to Grand Theft Auto IV’s depiction of immigrants as being more nuanced and sympathetic than that demonstrated by the exquisite Baltimore-set television drama, The Wire.

But what’s really nagged and irritated me over the following weeks is that, with a little distance and perspective, the bold proclamation was so obviously made, like so many from within our industry, with the aim of elevating video games to the respectability of more established media via bald association.

The opinion piece was written following a short weekend's playing of the game just prior to its release and, as I’ve played on through the rest of the story, the fault lines in that specific claim have become ever more apparent. While I adore the slow pacing of the first few hours, the way Nico starts off on the straight and narrow and is dragged into the shadows of the American Dream by forces of poverty and necessity, the game soon enough swings into full adolescent-posing-as-adult narrative fizz.

Quote:
In the weeks prior to GTA IV’s release, Rockstar made promises that print and online publications would receive early review code so that they might fully ingest and digest Liberty City in order to deliver mature and balanced opinions on its day of launch.

In reality, this was not the case, with precious few publications getting to spend prolonged time with the game ahead of release. The first review of the game came from the UK’s Official Xbox magazine bearing the worrying caveat “based on unfinished code”.

Quote:
At best then, by the time the game had been played, copy written and subbed ready for the Tuesday morning, most journalists (both in the UK and the US) had played for only a few hours, experiencing just a fraction of the game’s content, a situation testified to by various admissions in professional reviews.

Time Magazine dubbed their piece Grand Theft Auto IV: The 6.24% Review while the Associated Press reviewer, Lou Kesten, admitted to having spent only spent eight hours with the game.

Slate Magazine’s excellent Chris Baker admitted he only had chance to ‘scratch the surface of the game’ going on to say in a comment on N'Gai Croal’s Level Up blog: "I couldn't even attempt to be definitive…it was kinda liberating”.

The BBC noted the phenomenon saying: "Most reviewers were not sent advance copies of the game, and instead had to attend Rockstar offices or sit in booked hotel rooms to play the game,” where Rockstar could keep an eye and some pressure on them. While these few admitted the partial and necessarily subjective nature of their reviews, how many passed off their impressions as being definitive of the whole?

Quote:
For the reviewer it’s an inconvenience at best, at worst a pernicious and blatant attempt to colour their opinion in as short an amount of time as possible. Halo 3, Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart Wii: all big name titles (in both size and stature) only supplied to many games reviewers a few days before their release.

Quote:
What’s interesting is the recent rise in a different approach to reviews, one that isn’t dependent on their being published on the day of a game’s launch and that doesn’t doesn’t come with a score attached. The staggering popularity of Ben ‘Yathzee’ Croshaw’s Zero Punctuation videos (which, according to Alexa.com have booted host site The Escapist’s profile up several internet leagues), are almost always focused on games that the viewers have already experienced first hand post-release.

It's hard to research if a game is worth your time when the media fail to do their jobs. The gaming media is such a joke. Never trusting this crap again. Guess I'm back to waiting for trusted players, and user reviews. Something like the old videogamereviews.com where normal people gave their opinions on what they played from finished games they bought at the store.

GTA4 was lesser of the past GTA3d's for what I play the GTA's for (having fun doing random things). It only topped GTA:SA in graphics, physics, and controls. Sure most would think that's awesome enough. They left out the good stuff that should have been a given in GTA4:

*Awesome and fun codes that are easy and quick to put in - This phone crap is a pain.

*Gangs, and people on the street that want you dead - We don't have all these weapons to kill innocent helpless pedestrians, and cops.

*Interaction with random pedestrians - It was done in GTA:SA, and bully. GTA4 was expected to have a lot of interactivity with any and everybody in the game. Heck a simple positive and negative answer like gta:sa would have been immersing enough. This game has a lot of stuff but it feel like you're not a part of it.

*No activities outside of watching tv - Going to plays, or comedy clubs, and playing dull games with the annoying in game friends that wont' stop calling. GTA:SA had more arcade games, horse race betting, casino games, and more. What happened here.

*Indoors - The game was announced to have a smaller area than SA but more buildings you can go in, and without loading. In the end it feels like it's the same amount of interiors and most are just long stare cases to the top of a roof.

*Good rewards - finding 5,000 pidgins and killing them get you one helicopter, and it removes the cap on your weapon ammo!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's right, with the lacking unlimited ammo code you get to find and kill a million small gray dots for this perk! Most of the rewards is money. Since you can't buy cool buildings, lavish condos, and super tricked out helicopters with neon lights on the blades this money reward for majority of the side quests is pretty stupid.

And none of this stuff was mentioned in a review. I would have definitely thought twice about getting this game or recommending it if I had this kind of information. This game is all missions, and very very very little free roaming with interesting things to do. The thing is, there are a lot more that this GTA left out that other GTA 3D's had. Swimming underwater for one. It's a pretty game but it just feel too much like leggo blocks and less like an erector set with battery powered motors, and the works.

Can you imagine a taxi, ambulance, fire truck missions mode in this game with these graphics? I liked having this crazy taxi stuff in GTA. And some people think I'm crazy for not feeling GTA4. It just seem like it try it's best to annoy me. For example, re entering the "remove wanted level" code in the phone each time a explosion chain trigger some other explosion. Then there's the times when wanted levels just keep coming back up based on some odd, stupid, and unknown reason causing me to spam it until it stops.

I never liked GTA for missions, and the missions in gta4 didn't really change that. They are a bit better due to the controls, and triggered events that I mistook as total random and possible outside of missions at first. GTA:SA beats it in mission variety to me. I really wanted this game to top gta:sa. It's sad that I still play that game, even after GTA4's launch.

That game looks hot. idk much about this one though, what's with the online play? Is it like PvP third person fighting or something?

I said they were leaked pictures scor. Some guy in Europe that works at a store took pictures (I have no digital camera of my own due to it's reliance on PCs which I hate messing with so figured owning one was a waste of money for me). If it were me... I'd be playing the game now hah. I'd find a way to buy it then and there. I would probably post how I got the game early nah nah naaah nah! and stuff but not take the time to post links and pictures. :( Darn the wait.

---------------------------------------------------------------
For MP vedder I'll look up the bulletpoints.
1. Hangmans NOOSE
2. Car Jack City
3. Bomb da Base
4. Bomb da Base II
5. Mafia Work
6. Team Mafia Work
7. Deathmatch
8. Team Deathmatch
9. Turf War
10. Cops N Crooks
11. Race
12. GTA Race
13. Deal Breaker
14. Free Roam
15. unknown

on the screen with jacob it says you can customize characters for multiplayer. sex, hair, clothing...

Quote:
Mafia and Team Mafia work, you will play as one of Kenny Petrovics mafia henchmen, competing to complete hits ordered by the boss over your phone before your rivals. In "cops n crooks" A group of players will play as police, other as criminal, the police must make sure they don't escape alive, they can also see the criminals location ont heir GPS while criminals have no clue as where the police are.

Also in the single player mission "hangmans Noose" there will be co-op, the mission you and your friends will be able to escort a mafia man, while ambushed by the SWAT, but it doesn't end there, carjack, turfwar, bomb da base II, free mode, the 100 hours of single player are nothing compared to the 10 years of multiplayer.

Quote:
Cash is earned by winning levels, and it earns players more character customization options. More significantly, cash awards are accumulative throughout a persistent ranked career, which is how Rockstar "ranks" your skill level.

(No money farmers mwahaha)

Quote:
In Team Deathmatch, you can set up an equally balanced eight-on-eight battle or a lop-sided two on 14 fight. You can pick a custom or quick game, and if you're the party leader, tweaking options alters each game significantly. You can change weapon types (all handguns for instance or only snipers), add or subtract police, traffic, pedestrians, or blips (i.e. enemy location).

Quote:
We weren't given a view of the lobby system, but from Rockstar's hints, it sounds like you will just run around going Bananarama in Liberty City until someone launches a game. The good news is that when a game is set up, the host has a myriad of options depending on the mode. This is everything from turning on cops (yes, you can have a wanted level in multiplayer), adjusting the density of traffic, selecting from several weather options (fog and heavy rain being the coolest), time of day, and even what radio station is playing. We counted sixteen options for one mode and the others had similar amounts.

Quote:
While all of the multiplayer modes I played were good, C&C was far superior to the others. It's my new favorite type of entertainment.

C&C = cops and crooks (one team cops one team the crooks).

Anyway more info in these links. I trust you played a gta game before.

I really liked Vice City because I liked being able to take over all of the businesses in town and turn them corrupt. Supposedly this new game has none of that, so I am not expecting to like it.

Just think of the possibilities. Oraphin, Sure, etc could be chilling in their hideout playing "who can snipe the old lady while drunk" game. Then Vedder and I roll up and try to break up their fun (as cops, vedder by helicopter, while I use a standard cop car. Random guy that's on my flist as backup). Since they're drunk they'd have a time getting away, although with all of their illegal weapons and rocket launchers we'd be in a bit of trouble if they sober up (yes getting drunk is in the game, with dizzy effects and such).

Praetor is on my psn, also other eden members. But they got names other than their ffxi name and I'm not good with new names since they don't send me messages much on the new ones. :dunno:

If I was a millionaire Eden would be hooked up with ploid's choice games all the time. I know one and he gives thousands of dollars to his friends out of nowhere. I'd waste it though and not have it work for me. I'd also think about charity kinda late.

First gameplay video. It starts from the ps3 boot up screen. I will post the 360's vid too but it's like 10 seconds.

http://www.gametrailers.com/player/user ... 06801.html 7min vid

the short 360 vid I had to search for.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=90chndWcgGs

Wow I just watched it all. The car physics is a lot better than the old games. The voice acting is better, in reviews and a preview it was said the performances are uh academy calibur (not academy but you know those movie awards where they pick best actor and stuff. I'd look it up but not interested and it would take a while).

Sorry Vedder and Hogashi, I was planning on holding off of GTA4 until user reviews from gamers I trust (thought they would gimp the game to make people buy the dlc for xbox). But it looks like I'm going to have to get CoD4 a bit later. I got stuck on motorstorm anyway (I don't move to another race until I get gold).

Guess I should work on finishing the story mode in GTA:SA. When I got that game I went a full week off of FFXI and I was in crack mode for ffxi then. I thought GT4 would cause me to quit ffxi (before eden was around) but no online play (I got my ps2 online just to be ready for GT4) made me very sad and hateful of the game, but it was good, just not enough to prevent my ffxi crack.

I own a Ps3 and I shall own GTA4.

Nothing, NOTHING can beat the original though, going so fucking fast from that shitty bireds eyes view when you're tearing down the freeway, or across the broken golden gate bridge, and BAM! You don't make it and your shitty car crashes and burns into a bus, or a truck, or something that's just incredibly deadly that it isn't right.

Then those cheats for infinate and all weapons, and you found yourself a populated areas, and blew people to shitereens and nothing coul dstop you, and your multiplayer would just keep going up and up and up, til eventually you got bored, jumped in a truck for lulz, and ploughed through the cop's barracades to an Autoshop, spend a fraction of what you earned killing people, just so that you could do it all again.

Fkn awesomeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee~

lol that sounds pwn. Yea GTA's these days don't have multipliers and stuff like that to motivate your meyhem maddness (might get in even more trouble these days). I like doing crazy stuff in gta the most, and codes like making my cars fly and such. Wouldn't it be awesome if there is a GTA1 arcade game in GTA4? They already give GTA1 and GTA2 away for free on pc.

------------------
Some shooting cops, and running away vid. 1min long. Youtube has been taking down all of the video leaks fast. If it's not up, oops.

http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=oNNTfOs6TDM

Another. 3:36 seconds, messing around with bikes, and cars, while getting tossed a few feet each time he crash on a bike.
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/user ... 06837.html

Another lol he was beating up some pedestrians and a cop came and pulled a gun on him. The character that's being controlled put his arms up not resisting arrest, then he takes off running. I guess you enter a choice mode now when you are captured by cops close range when they first spot you. I like the body movement and how it leans when you're turning while running (like you should). And of course it might be taken down by the time I post this. Darn rockstar. Dude this game looks so sick to just go crazy in :o
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UMd6sy1X4E

Best quality vid so far.
Lot of driving around in a suv crashing and tearing up the car. The last crash forced the player flying out of the car, then the passenger got out to fight him. Took the player a while to beat the guy up. The opponent was a good fighter it seems.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2Fpunltwh8

Long good vid. Some pimps beat him up at the end.

And again
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x56n5k ... videogames these are like 9 minutes.

There are people downloading the 360 version and they're able to play it, they can even go online with it. I thought Microsoft could tell if you hacked your xbox? That's pretty messed up, people that pay legit have to wait while pirates play early...

Yea, GTA4 might be the GTA that finally get's banned :(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8n0CeuN4zk

Looks a bit like news media bait right here. I must get this asap before it's taken out of stores and censored.

Live video feed of a guy playing gta4. lol yea I'm getting hooked on watching vids since Rockstar keeps taking them down and they won't allow no official game site to produce and show quality vids and pictures.

http://www.justin.tv/swiftor

Rockstar can't take the above down since it's a normal guy that has the game and not a person under NDA.

:plain: If they ban GTA4... than they should ban violent movies like fk'ing... anything with gun violence... Why cant people realize we play VIDEO GAMES to do stuff we normally cant actually do, or know is wrong to do irl. Politics and parrents wanting to ban sertain game's piss me off so much...
